Hippotherapy Does Not Involve Hippos
The term hippotherapy (from the Greek word
“hippos” meaning horse)
was originally developed in Germany in the 1960’s.
Saddling Up For Speech
Therapists, parents, and physicians have
witnessed dramatic changes in their childrens' communication
skills utilizing a hippotherapy approach. Children with
diagnoses of autism, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD),
verbal apraxia, cerebral palsy, speech and developmental
delays, and others have all shown significant gains.
PHYSICAL/OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY OUTCOMES
Occupational and/or physical therapists trained
in classic hippotherapy can achieve improved posture, increased
or decreased muscle tone, and improved coordination and
balance using the unmatched three-dimensional movement of
the horse. By varying the position of the child, progress
with specific sensory integration goals can be maximized.

Therapeutic Riding Offered at Green Acres Equestrian Center
Horses are fun to be around and learning to ride one is even better. Our NARHA Certified Therapeutic Instructors focus on teaching children and adults with special needs to become independent riders.
Horseback riding is a wonderful way to improve balance and co-ordination, flexibility, strengthen core muscles and develop self confidence. Several hundred bones and muscles are gently moved and exercised in the process of horseback riding. Circulation, respiration and metabolism are all improved with this activity.
Green Acres Instructors, Joan Aronson and Kelly Rickard, work with the unique challenges of each student to develop a program for general fitness, mental well being and greater personal independence all in a safe and enjoyable environment.
Lessons may be scheduled for 30 minute or 1 hour sessions. Please call the Center for more information and a tour of the facilities. More information regarding Equine Assisted Activities may be found at www.narha.org.
